Legislative UpdateDear Friends and Neighbors, As we head into the final week of session, it’s starting to look like we might not finish on time. The constitutionally-mandated end of session is May 19th, but with major bills still up in the air and key agreements yet to be reached, wrapping things up on schedule is looking less likely. Unfortunately, the first 23 days of session were wasted when one caucus decided to stay home and not show up for work. Now, we’re seeing the cost of that delay in real time. That being said, we’ve made good progress over the past couple of weeks. Most of the budget bills have passed through the Minnesota House, and we’re down to just a few remaining. But as the clock ticks down, some of my Democrat colleagues are starting to worry we’re running out of time. To them, I say: remember, Republicans showed up ready to work on Day 1. Meanwhile, some folks chose to stay absent for nearly a month, all while collecting their taxpayer-funded paychecks. If you missed it, you can see Rep. Dawn Gillman (R-Dassel) giving Rep. Tina Liebling a reality check during a recent committee hearing [HERE]. With only a few bills left to approve, I’m optimistic that we’ll get them through early next week. The Senate is doing its part, and once both chambers have passed their versions, any differences will be hammered out in conference committees before heading to the Governor’s desk for approval. Now, I made a promise last fall to lower taxes and control government spending, and that’s exactly what I’ve been fighting for. I’m voting for bills that aim to right-size government, and I’m voting against those that would lock in irresponsible spending or raise your taxes. Why is this so important? Because last session, Democrats and Governor Walz managed to waste an $18 billion surplus and raised your taxes by an additional $10 billion. Fast forward two years, and here we are, facing a $6 billion deficit. In the meantime, government grew by nearly 40%, adding 6,000 new employees and hundreds of millions of dollars in new salaries. Minnesotans deserve a smarter, more responsible approach. It’s time to put taxpayers first and stop this cycle of waste!
Happy Fishing Opener, Minnesota!![]() Grab your tackle box and dust off those rods—Minnesota’s Fishing Opener is here! This weekend marks a treasured tradition across our state, as anglers of all ages head out to lakes and rivers in search of walleye, northern pike, and good old-fashioned relaxation. Whether you're casting from a boat at sunrise, teaching your kids how to bait a hook, or simply enjoying the peaceful rhythm of the water, the Fishing Opener is about more than just the catch—it's about community, memories, and the joy of the great outdoors. To all the early risers, cabin-goers, and weekend warriors: tight lines and safe travels! May your coolers be full, your stories big (but mostly true), and your time with family and friends unforgettable. Here's to another great season on Minnesota’s beautiful waters.
Standing Up for Nonpublic Education![]() On Wednesday, I had the honor of joining a powerful group of students, parents, educators, and community leaders at the Capitol to stand up for nonpublic education. The Governor’s push to slash aid for these schools is not only short-sighted—it’s flat-out wrong. Let’s be clear: Republicans in the Minnesota House won’t even entertain this idea. It’s a no-go. Our Senate colleagues feel the same. Stripping support from nonpublic schools doesn’t just hurt students—it undermines the very families who depend on them. These schools play a vital role in our state’s education system, and we won’t stand by while that’s threatened. This proposal flies in the face of the unity the Governor claims to champion under his “One Minnesota” slogan. If that motto means anything, it should mean opportunity and respect for all Minnesota students—regardless of the school they attend. Check out House Republican Leader Niska’s comments on this issue [HERE].
Happy Mother's Day!![]() This weekend, we pause to celebrate the incredible women who shape our lives—our mothers, grandmothers, stepmoms, mother figures, and all those who give so selflessly to their families and communities. To all the moms out there: thank you for your strength, your love, your wisdom, and your patience. You wear so many hats—caregiver, teacher, cheerleader, provider—and often do it all without asking for anything in return. You are truly the heart of the home and the foundation of our families. On this Mother’s Day, I hope you're able to take a well-deserved break, feel appreciated, and spend time doing what brings you joy. Whether it's breakfast in bed, a walk outside, or simply some peace and quiet—today is about you. Happy Mother’s Day, and thank you for everything you do!
Looking Ahead! As we head into the final stretch of session, I want to take a moment to thank you for continuing to make your voices heard. Your concerns are what guide my work at the Capitol—and when state decisions threaten to drive up costs for families or place new burdens on our local governments, I push back. I know who pays the price, and I take that personally. Whether you have a question about legislation or a story about how policies are impacting your community, I hope you’ll reach out. My office is here to listen, and I value every conversation. You can always call or email me directly, and for real-time updates, be sure to follow my Facebook page. It’s an honor to serve you, and I’ll keep fighting for the values that matter most to District 30B. Let’s keep working together to put Minnesotans first. Sincerely, Representative Paul Novotny Minnesota House of Representatives, District 30B |
