Neighbors,

Deadlines are upon us, which adds urgency to making sure our priority bills are heard in House and Senate committees. Currently, I am working to empower the voices of our local community members and leaders. Moorhead Mayor Shelly Carlson spoke in favor of our local sales tax option bill, Moorhead Area Public Schools (MAPS) Indian Education Liaison Delores Gabbard shared her support for the inclusive modifications for our world’s best workforce. Finally, this week we will hear from Kristin Dehmer, Executive Director of Human Resources and Operations for MAPS in favor of my Increase Teachers of Color Bill. Working together, we can create the change we all care so much about.

The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021

Last week, President Joe Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 to help thousands across the country and in Minnesota recover from the impact of the pandemic. If you want to learn more about this historic assistance package, the National Council of State Legislatures (NCSL) has a summary of the measure.

Virtual Town Hall

Please join Sen. Eken, Rep. Marquart and me for a virtual town hall on Sunday, April 11. Our original date was postponed due to Gov. Walz’s State of the State address to Minnesotans on March 21. As April 11 nears, I will send details on how you can participate. Submit a question in advance by clicking on this link:

Turning the Dials

On Friday, Governor Walz announced new public health guidance. The new guidelines are welcome changes, but until more Minnesotans are vaccinated, it is important to continue to follow safety guidelines.

Minnesota Insulin Safety Net Program

Alec Smith was a 26-year-old Minnesotan who aged off his parents’ insurance and could not afford the $1,300 monthly cost of insulin. Alex died rationing his medication. The law in Alec’s memory provides an emergency safety net to individuals with an urgent need for insulin, as well as a long-term assistance program. If you or someone you know is having trouble accessing emergency insulin, go to this website for helpful information.
