Grateful for the Privilege: Reflecting on My Time as Chair of the IRRRB

Two years ago, I was honored to be elected chair of the Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB), becoming the first Republican to hold this role. As my term comes to an end, I want to take a moment to reflect on the progress we’ve made and express my sincere gratitude to the agency, my colleagues, and the people of the Iron Range for the opportunity to serve.

When I began this journey, I stated my commitment to fostering partnerships that grow and attract businesses, strengthen our communities, and ensure that the Iron Range continues to be a place of opportunity and prosperity. I’m proud to say that, together, we have made meaningful strides toward that vision.

Over the past two years, the IRRR has played a critical role in supporting responsible mining, investing in our schools, developing and instituting new housings program, and expanding opportunities for businesses and workers alike. We have worked tirelessly to create a business environment that attracts new industries while supporting the legacy industries that have defined our region for generations. Whether through infrastructure investments, workforce development programs, or financing options for businesses, our efforts have been rooted in the belief that the Range’s best days are ahead of us. These resources provided by the IRRR are essential in ensuring that our communities have the tools they need to grow and thrive.

A thriving region requires strong schools, good jobs, and a commitment to economic diversification. The IRRR has been instrumental in making that vision a reality. From supporting educational programs that prepare students for the workforce to investing in broadband expansion that connects even our most rural communities, we have laid the groundwork for sustained growth. These investments will pay dividends for years to come.

None of this progress would have been possible without the collaboration of my fellow board members, local leaders, businesses, and community members who share a deep passion for the future of the Iron Range. I am especially grateful to Commissioner Rukavina and her dedicated team at the IRRR, whose expertise and commitment to our region have been invaluable in advancing our shared goals.

As I step aside and welcome new leadership to the board, I remain as committed as ever to the success of our region. Congratulations to my fellow Iron Range Delegation colleagues and friends, Senator Eichorn in being elected as Chair and Representative Skraba as Vice Chair. The work of the IRRR is not just about funding projects—it’s about ensuring that future generations have the same opportunities to live, work, and raise their families here in the Northland. That mission must continue.

Thank you to the people of the Iron Range for entrusting me with this responsibility. It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve and learn as chair, and I look forward to continuing to advocate for our communities in the years ahead. The Range is strong, and with continued collaboration and determination, its future is even brighter.

Representative Spencer Igo
