St. Paul – Wednesday, chaos erupted in and around the United States Capitol as Congress assembled to certify the results of the November presidential election. Rep. Luke Frederick released this statement regarding unrest at the U.S. Capitol and the protests at the Minnesota State Capitol:
“Organizing and advocating for change is at the heart of our republic. We have the right to assemble peacefully and express our thoughts, but violence is never acceptable. The mayhem and destruction that took place yesterday at the United States Capitol cannot be tolerated and should not be endorsed by anyone, especially in leadership positions.
“In Minnesota, elected officials who attended yesterday’s State Capitol rally, where the words "purge” and “civil war” were used, showed an absolute lack of awareness and leadership. This type of dangerous rhetoric only adds to the anarchy, damage and death that was witnessed at the United States Capitol.
“I will listen to all voices within my district, but the actions of those who advocate for violence and physical intimidation will not be tolerated. I remain committed to working with our State Capitol security personnel to ensure safety for all those who work and visit the Minnesota capitol complex.
“I encourage everyone to have your voices heard but do so in a calm, respectful, and professional manner to ensure a peaceful transition of power and the survival of our democracy.”
