Neighbors, Tomorrow, Sen. Frentz, Rep. Brand, and I are hosting a Town Hall at the Mankato Intergovernmental Center. I hope you can join us to ask questions about the 2023 legislative session.
My LegislationIt was a busy week for legislation I am authoring. Among the bills traveling through committee this week: HF559, allowing trainee election judges to continue to serve until they reach the age of 18 HF696, modifies community first serve and support payment rates HF1474 directs funds to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture for continuation of the MDA’s Biofuel Infrastructure Grant Program. HF1486 makes technical changes related to SUD licensing and treatment HF1554 appropriates funding for grants to Second Harvest Heartland In the Legacy Committee this week, I presented HF1543, which provides funding for statewide children’s museums, including the Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota in Mankato. You can read the Session Daily story and watch the video clip here. The Community and The CapitolThis week Moms Demand Action held their “Day on the Hill.” I was so honored to receive a visit from my 6th grade teacher, Diane Dobitz, who was advocating for the anti-gun violence group. Representatives from Cultivate Mankato also visited. Director and Founder Candice Deal-Bartell was among the team who came to the Capitol. Earned Sick and Safe TimeThursday night, I voted with my House DFL colleagues to expand Earned Sick and Safe Time benefits to all Minnesota workers. The legislation would ensure, at a minimum, one hour of paid Earned Sick and Safe Time for every 30 hours worked, up to at least 48 hours per year. Over 900,000 Minnesota workers – a third of the state’s workforce – lack access to any paid time off when they or a family member are ill or need to see a doctor. No one wants workers to make impossible choices between staying home while sick or to care for a sick child – and getting a paycheck. This legislation helps everyone. Video of the floor session will be available on House Public Information Services’ YouTube Channel. The legislation is advancing in the Minnesota Senate where it awaits a hearing in the Finance Committee Childcare AssistanceOn Monday night, I voted with all my DFL colleagues to pass a pair of bills to deliver investments to stabilize childcare and early learning in the state. HF 13, increases the maximum rates for all childcare assistance (CCAP)-eligible children. A review of state rates shows Minnesota is currently near the bottom. The rate change would apply to Minnesota children of all ages. The second bill, HF 150, delivers $12.25 million in emergency investment in childcare stabilization grants and includes $40 million in early learning scholarships, with expanding eligibility to start at birth, rather than the current age of three. This will provide early learning and care to an estimated 4,000 additional children. You can watch video of the floor debate can on the House Public Information’s YouTube Channel. Subcommittee on Employee RelationsSpeaker Hortman has appointed me to the Subcommittee on Employee Relations. I am looking forward to serving on this important committee to continue advocating for workers.
