SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Today, the Minnesota House passed HF 5, the Universal School Meals bill, to provide school breakfast and lunch to all Minnesota students at no cost, regardless of their family income. Rep. Sandra Feist (DFL - New Brighton) co-authored and voted for the legislation. The bill passed on a vote of 70-58.
“I am a proud co-author of this bill to ensure that no student in Minnesota is unable to learn because they are hungry. One in six students in Minnesota is food insecure, and this bill will ensure that all students are equally able to be present and ready to learn. Today, I introduced a bill that partners with the Universal Meals bill to ensure that our funding formula remains in alignment. I’m excited to be a part of this transformational change for Minnesota students.”
The bill has garnered support from teachers, food service workers, school board members, parents, and organizations fighting hunger. The Senate’s companion bill is being passed through its committees.
