Statement from Co-Chairs of Inclusive Democracy Caucus on Anniversary of the January 6th Insurrection

Monday, January 6, 2025

On January 6, 2021, in an attempt to overthrow the results of a democratic election for president and hold on to power, Donald Trump led an insurrection on the United States’ Capitol. Four years later, he promised to pardon his supporters who violently clashed with law enforcement as they broke into the Capitol attempting to halt the democratic processes of the United States’ government.

In memory of the attack on our nation’s Capitol, the co-chairs of the Inclusive Democracy Caucus released the following statement:

“Four years ago, the country watched in shock as then-President Trump and his allies incited a violent insurrection at our nation's Capitol with the goal of overturning an election that he lost. Since then, more than 1,000 Americans have been convicted in the violent and premeditated

plot that prevented a peaceful transition of power for the first time in American history.

“Today, four years later, we brace ourselves for that same former President to take power, untethered from any legal accountability for his actions by his hand-picked Supreme Court Majority. This time he is bolstered by a coalition of politicians and allies who helped carry out that January 6th plot along with self-interested billionaires and corporate monopolies that have traded in any commitment they may have had to our democratic freedoms, for their own profits and access to power.

“As Co-Chairs of the Inclusive Democracy Caucus, we are crystal clear that our role in this moment is to protect the democratic freedoms and civil rights of all Minnesotans. We also share the experience of being first sworn in to the Minnesota legislature the day before January 6, 2021, and have spent our legislative careers working to protect Minnesota’s democracy from the ongoing damage of January 6th and the disinformation, extremism, and political violence that continues to spread in its wake. We are committed to using the power we have to fight for the rule of law, our democratic freedoms, and the rights of everyone in our community, especially our most vulnerable neighbors.”
