Minneapolis, MN – At approximately 5:15 p.m. on May 30, 2024, the Minneapolis Police Department received a call of two people shot inside an apartment on the 2200 block of Blaisdell Ave. S. As police officers responded, the suspected shooter opened fire on the officers. Two officers and the suspect were injured during the gunfight, the victim and the suspected shooter died at the scene despite lifesaving efforts. One officer sustained an apparent non-life-threatening injury, and another received life-threatening injuries. Both officers were transported to Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC). One officer was treated and released. The second officer, identified as Officer Jamal Mitchell, died of his injuries at the hospital.?
The Minnesota House Minneapolis Delegation released the following statement:
“Our hearts are with the family of Officer Mitchell and those injured and killed during yesterday's senseless violence. We are grateful to the first responders who immediately rendered aid. As we await further details from the investigation, we are focused on the families, the neighbors, and the community impacted by the tragedy and trauma of last night's gun violence.”
Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) investigators are working with MPD investigators to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting deaths.
