Friends and neighbors,
Last Thursday, Minnesota Management and Budget released its February budget forecast, which shows the budget outlook is not where we could like it to be compared to November’s forecast. Donald Trump’s reckless economic policies are impacting this forecast, with inflation expected to climb and tax receipts expected to fall.
Instead of bringing down prices like they promised on the campaign trail, Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress are on the verge of enacting a sweeping tax cut for corporations and the ultra-wealthy, and they’re going to pay for it by slashing federal spending on health care for children, families, seniors, and people with disabilities. This will have dire consequences for the people of Minnesota and our state budget.
In addition to funding consequences, Donald Trump and Elon Musk are attempting to dismantle the federal government – just this last week there’s been talk of a looming executive order to dismantle the department of education, which would be catastrophic for our education systems from early learners to higher education. Through this chaos, more people are understanding how vital the Federal and State government are to our lives – from the roads we drive on, to the medications we need, and the food we eat.
Unfortunately, here in Minnesota, Republicans are wasting time by bringing partisan MAGA bills to the House floor, knowing they will not pass, instead of working with Democrats to pass legislation to help Minnesotans navigate these impacts from the Federal government. Instead, GOP leaders have publicly stated their strategy is not to pass legislation, but instead to take meaningless votes on “messaging” bills that speak to their activist base.
Last week’s updated budget forecast makes it clear that it’s time for House Republicans to stop wasting time with political stunts on the House floor and start working with Democrats to craft a budget that benefits all of Minnesota.
Harmful GOP Bills
If you follow me on my official Facebook page, you may have seen my report on how House Republicans tired to stop the Blue Line Extension project. Our community deserve the same opportunities as other metro areas, and the federal funding for this project will ensure we remain competitive. I firmly believe the Blue Line Extension will deliver jobs, economic development, and provide more mobility to more people. I will continue to champion this project and fight against the GOP’s attempt to undermine our work. Here is a link to my appearance on the TPT Almanac show to discuss the importance of this project and why we must invest in our community. Watch the recording here.
Late last week, we voted down a bill that would have increase gun violence in Minnesota. These “shoot first, ask questions later" laws don't merely alter traditional self-defense principles – they effectively escalate violent situations and issue a license to kill. I was proud to vote in opposition with my DFL colleagues to reject this bill that would deepen existing inequities in our justice system. True public safety requires equal protection under law, not legislation that turns subjective fear into a weapon wielded disproportionately against communities of color.
Last year, Democrats passed gun violence prevention measures that are working, and House Republicans are eager to try to regress Minnesota. We need to be making Minnesota safer for our kids, not more dangerous.
Today, a bill to delay Paid Family and Medical Leave will hit the Floor – and a bill to completely eliminate the program is right behind it. This is a disservice to Minnesotans who need their state legislature to provide stability and protect their quality of life and their future. I’m proud to stand with workers and business owners to protect their ability to provide stability for employees and for employees to be able to take time to care for their loved ones.
The debate will begin at 3:30PM, you can watch the Floor hearing here.
Urban Homeworks Forum
I had a great time at the Urban Homeworks’s first Housing Justice Forum of 2025, "Building from Both Sides!" I'm especially grateful to State Representative Michael Howard and State Senator Liz Boldon for their insights about the ways the state can address the diverse housing needs of Minnesotans. We had a robust conversation about moving housing initiatives forward in split legislatures and how we can protect our neighbors from federal threats. I appreciated all the thoughtful questions from everyone who attended. Thank you again to everyone who made it such a successful event!
Women’s History Month
This Women's History Month, I'm reflecting on the countless women who have shaped our world, often against incredible odds. From scientists and activists to artists and everyday heroes, their resilience, innovation, and courage inspire us all.
Let's not just celebrate the well-known figures, but also the women in our own lives – mothers, sisters, friends, colleagues – who demonstrate strength and grace daily. Recognizing the contributions of women is important, and this month is always a great way to highlight all that women have done in our society. Just as those women have inspired me, I hope my work can inspire others to know that they are needed and welcome in our society regardless of where they come from.
