Legislative Update - January 29, 2021

Friday, January 29, 2021

Dear Neighbors,

It has been another eventful week at the legislature. Governor Walz and Lieutenant Governor Flanagan introduced their budget, and the Democracy for the People Act had its first hearing. Come hear what’s happening at the legislature and a conversation about the issues that impact our community. Tomorrow, Saturday 30, join Rep. Jim Davnie, Sen. Patricia Torres Ray, and I at a virtual town hall. If you’d like to participate, please visit Senator Torres Ray’s Facebook page at 10am.

Standing up for Our Democracy in this Turbulent Time

On Monday, the Minnesota House passed House Resolution 1, a resolution that condemns the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and declares support for our democracy, rule of law, and free and fair elections. I spoke on the House floor for the first time to support this Resolution. I spoke because I believe it matters that Minnesota lawmakers from both parties stand up to defend our democracy, it matters that we do it now, and it matters that we do it together. Attempts to undermine our democracy didn’t happen overnight, and there’s no quick fix to repairing the damage that was done, but we can rebuild and strengthen it if we stand together. Passing this bipartisan resolution with a vote of 111-8 was the first step.

Building a Strong, Inclusive Democracy

I came to the Minnesota Legislature to build a stronger, more inclusive democracy that’s centered around the needs and voices of all Minnesotans. Yesterday, my bill HF 9, the Democracy for the People Act, had its first public hearing. Minnesotans from across the state came to the Capitol (virtually) to testify and share about the important work of defending and strengthening our right to vote and participate. I encourage you to watch their powerful testimony here. We’re working together to ensure that Minnesota voters are at the center of our democracy.

Gov. Walz Announces COVID-19 Recovery Budget

Earlier this week, the governor released his budget proposal for the next two years. Gov. Walz’s COVID-19 Recovery Budget focuses on supporting working families, ensuring students catch up on learning, and helping small businesses stay afloat while driving Minnesota’s economic recovery. I’m pleased to see that the governor has prioritized many of the urgent challenges Minnesotans are facing and intends to invest in the future of our state. My colleagues and I will review the governor’s proposal and develop our own budget proposal over the next few weeks.
