Rep. Ben Bakeberg Responds to Democrats Abandoning Bipartisan Education Agreement

Saint Paul, MN – On April 23, a bipartisan agreement was reached on HF 2433, an education finance bill focused on local control, funding flexibility, and mandate relief –the top concerns voiced by educators statewide.

“This bill wasn’t perfect, but it prioritized students over bureaucracy and represented a responsible, negotiated compromise,” said Rep. Ben Bakeberg. “Democrats agreed to it. Then they walked away.”

Key provisions of HF 2433 included:

  • Over $150 million in redirected aid for schools
  • $40 million to support the Science of Reading through the READ Act
  • No new funding for state education bureaucracy
  • Sunset of the unemployment insurance mandate by 2028
  • Elimination of funding for legislatively named nonprofits
  • Rejection of the Governor’s proposed $680 million in education cuts

“With school year wrapping up, we had a chance to deliver real, flexible support where it’s needed most,” Bakeberg said. “It’s disappointing to see political games take priority over solutions our schools asked for and deserve.”
