SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Representatives Samakab Hussein (DFL- Saint Paul) and María Isa Pérez-Vega (DFL-Saint Paul), and Ivan Roberto Sierra Medel, Mexico’s new head consul in St. Paul, met to discuss strengthening dialogue and collaboration on economic, educational, cultural, and health issues impacting the Mexican community in Minnesota. Minnesota's Latino population, with a significant Mexican presence, is a vital and growing segment of the state. Statistics show the Latino population growth accounts for more than one quarter (26%) of Minnesota’s overall population growth since 2000. Minnesota's Latino population is the third largest demographic group in the state with 345,640 residents.
“Minnesota's booming Latino population necessitates a focus on issues crucial to their well-being and prosperity,” declared Rep. Perez-Vega. “This meeting signifies a commitment to ongoing collaboration. Through fostering a diverse and robust system of collaboration, we can unlock the full potential of our vibrant Latine community. This means supporting economic vitality through trade opportunities, ensuring access to culturally responsive healthcare, and empowering participation in the agricultural sector. Together, we can build a more inclusive and prosperous future for all Minnesotans.”
The meeting, which was held on May 8, 2024, was initiated to discuss Representative Perez-Vega and Representative Hussein's concern regarding the Department of Transportation’s recent announcement that they are considering the termination of the Joint Cooperation Agreement (JCA) between Delta Air Lines and Aeromexico. Both Representatives have been opponents of the DOT’s recent policy shift.
“This is a time we should be building bridges with Mexico, not burning them,” said Representative Samakab Hussein. “Terminating the JCA would significantly risk massive flight cancellations, including non-stop service between Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport and Benito Juarez International Airport, which in 2023 serviced more than 86,000 passengers.”
Both representatives agreed to continue working with the Mexican Consul and the Governor’s office to find a resolution protecting consumers and businesses.
They also focused on identifying areas of common interest, including:
- Economic Development: Fostering trade and investment opportunities between Minnesota and Mexico.
- Education: Enhancing educational exchange programs and supporting the academic success of Mexican students in Minnesota.
- Cultural Exchange: Promoting cultural understanding and appreciation through events and initiatives.
- Healthcare: Sharing best practices and collaborating on healthcare initiatives benefitting both communities.
Representative Perez-Vega also expressed her gratitude to the Consulate for their support and advocacy for the proposal of the first Minnesota Latino Museum to be located on the West Side of St Paul. Consul Ivan recognized the first Latino community in the state of Minnesota that was established by Mexican migrants that came to the state in the early 1900s. The consulate acknowledged how much Mexico’s culture and history is represented here in the state and how important it is that the values of the Mexican people’s contribution is vibrant every day in our Minnesota community.
Representatives Samakab Hussein and María Isa Pérez-Vega, and Consul Ivan Roberto Sierra Medel, are planning a visit for a delegation from the Minnesota Legislature and members of Medel's office to Mexico to discuss further collaboration and initiatives in July 2024.
