Legislative Update 07.01.2024

Monday, July 1, 2024

Dear Neighbors,

I hope you're having a fantastic summer! I'm excited to share some upcoming events in our district that I'll be attending to show my support for our community efforts.

The Somali Soccer Tournament is open now through July 2nd. I am committed to providing the youth in our Saint Paul community with opportunities I didn't have growing up. Due to a lack of funding and resources, many children from marginalized neighborhoods have been unable to participate in sports like soccer, basketball, and football. It is an honor to give back to my community and be a leader who inspires the next generation.

The upcoming soccer tournament in our district is a wonderful opportunity for our youth to engage in healthy competition and stay active. Sports programs like this are vital for teaching teamwork, promoting physical fitness, and preventing crime by keeping our youth engaged in positive activities.

Reflecting on my own experience, I remember playing sports locally with neighborhood kids, without the pressure of travel teams. Coach Fartun Osman, who is hosting this tournament, has been a pillar in our community, dedicating over 20 years to fostering youth sports. Her efforts have been instrumental in providing a wide range of sports opportunities for our young generation.

Please see below for a list of upcoming community events.

36th Annual Rondo Days

Date: July 20, 2024

I am proud to have secured local funding to allow our community to celebrate our rich cultural identity once again. Rondo Days has always held a special place in my heart, as it was a significant part of my life growing up.

Held annually on the third Saturday in July in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Rondo Days commemorates the historic Rondo neighborhood, an African American community tragically divided by the construction of Interstate 94 in the mid-1960s. Founded in 1983 by Floyd G. Smaller and Marvin R. Anderson, Rondo Days has grown to become Minnesota's largest African American-sponsored festival. After a four-year hiatus, I am thrilled to revive this important celebration of our heritage and community.

Oromo Soccer Tournament

Dates: July 27 - August 3, 2024

Join us for an exhilarating week-long celebration of Honoring Our Roots, Building Our Future with Resilience as the theme at the highly anticipated Oromo Sports Federation in North America (OSFNA) Festival! As a non-profit organization, they are dedicated to bringing together Oromos from all walks of life to immerse themselves in a vibrant showcase of culture, sports, and entertainment.

Don’t miss out on this incredible event that celebrate our shared love for sports and community!
