Friends and neighbors,
We’re a little more than halfway through the session, and things are getting busier as we all work towards passing final funding bills so I am glad to be back with an update. In between the many Committee sessions that we are squeezing in, I always appreciate meeting constituents. Thanks to everyone who’s made the trek to the Capitol! For meetings, you can always contact my LA Robin at: Robin.Mercer-Taylor@house.mn.gov.
Redevelopment of the Hillcrest Golf Course into The Heights
I recently presented HF 1010, a bill to support the remediation and development of the old Hillcrest Golf Course. This project will support our community by bringing housing, jobs, and public green space to the Eastside. Urban areas like our city typically lack greenspaces – or areas where residents and families can gather – without the expectation of spending money. They are usually a sign of a vibrant and cared-for community.
The Saint Paul Port Authority will collaborate with several groups with expertise on housing, urban design, sustainability, outdoor spaces and public art. I’m incredibly excited for the opportunity to provide resources to improve our community’s public spaces! You can read more about the plan for this space here.
Making Minnesota a Safer Place for Workers
I am proud to champion HF 2505, which would provide funding for programs to support victims of labor trafficking and exploitation. This session, the House already passed legislation to hold accountable labor traffickers. This bill is a next step to ensuring we provide wrap around resources to support individuals when they need it most.
Making Minnesota a Trans Refuge State
Last month on March 24, 2023, after a long night on the House Floor, we voted to pass legislation with similar protections for our trans neighbors. With the passage of the Trans Refuge bill, we made Minnesota a safe refuge for community members who are trans, and continue to face dangerous levels of discrimination across the country. With our neighbors from the East, West, and South also threatening the lives and well-being of our trans neighbors, Minnesota will remain a safe place for those seeking gender-affirming care without fear of criminal penalty in states that have stripped these human rights.
