SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Today, Representative Lee Liz (DFL- Saint Paul) visited Txuj Ci Hmong Language & Culture Lower Campus Elementary to help serve students lunch as part of the state’s new universal school meal program. Rep. Lee spoke with school administrators about the program's success and its positive impact on students. As a Title I school, Principal May Lee Xiong estimates that Txuj Ci Lower Campus has served over 102,900 meals so far in the 2024 school year.
"A huge thank you to the Txuj Ci Lower Campus team – the administrators, teachers, and especially the school food service providers,” said Rep. Lee. “Their hard work and dedication are what make the universal school meals program a resounding success. The historic funding for universal free school meals from my colleagues and I at the Minnesota legislature is an investment in our children’s health and education – as well as the overall well-being of our state. By ensuring all students have access to nutritious food, we are removing a barrier to learning and fostering an environment where every child can reach their full potential.”
In the historic 2023 legislative session, Minnesota became a national leader in ensuring child well-being by dedicating funding to provide free, nutritious meals to all students in public schools. This initiative marks a significant step towards a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive in the classroom, free from the burden of hunger.
Studies consistently show the critical link between proper nutrition and academic success. Children who eat healthy breakfasts and lunches are better able to focus, retain information, and participate actively in class. This initiative will not only alleviate food insecurity for countless families but also empower students to excel in their studies.
