SAINT PAUL, MN – Rep. Jim Joy (R-Hawley) released the following statement after it was announced that the Moorhead Police Department was removing its school resource officers (SROs) from Moorhead Area Public Schools:
“The changes to the student disciplinary policy included in the Democrats’ education bill puts the safety of students and staff at risk. Moorhead Area Public Schools is not the only district to see law enforcement step back as SROs in our region. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office is removing their officials from the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Public Schools, and Detroit Lakes Public Schools are at risk of losing theirs.
“Without an immediate resolution, school officials will not be able to provide a safe learning environment as kids head back to school. The League of Minnesota Cities, Department of Education, Minnesota Police Chiefs Association, Minnesota Sheriffs Association, the Attorney General’s Office, and all partners need to work faster to resolve this issue to ensure all of Minnesota’s students are safe at school.”
