Legislative Update

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

We’re now five weeks into the House Republican majority, and the energy at the Capitol is incredible! This week has been packed with committee hearings, meetings, and the introduction of strong legislation that will make a real difference for Minnesotans. With the special election on March 11 approaching, House Republicans remain focused and optimistic, working hard every day to pass meaningful policies that benefit all Minnesotans.

Now, let’s dive into some of the highlights from this week!

Minnesota’s Budget Forecast: A Crisis We Saw Coming

The latest budget forecast is in, and it confirms what House Republicans have been warning about all along—Democrats’ reckless spending and tax hikes are driving Minnesota straight into a financial disaster. Despite rising revenues, government spending is growing even faster, leading to a projected $6 billion deficit for the FY 2028-29 biennium.

This is exactly what happens when one-party rule prioritizes unchecked government growth over responsible budgeting. Over the past two years, Democrats raised taxes by more than $10 billion on hardworking Minnesotans. Now, with a shrinking surplus and a looming shortfall, they must own the mess they created.

Let me be clear: Raising taxes again is not an option. Minnesotans are already paying too much, and they deserve better than being forced to clean up the financial disaster caused by irresponsible leadership. House Republicans will stand firm—we need real solutions, not more tax hikes.

I’ll keep fighting for a fiscally responsible, balanced budget that reins in reckless spending, prioritizes real needs, and ensures that Minnesota families aren’t left footing the bill for government mismanagement.

Supporting Paid Family Leave – But We Need to Get It Right

1

In a recent interview with AM 1100 The Flag, I had the opportunity to discuss Minnesota’s Paid Family and Medical Leave program and why I believe it’s crucial that families have the time they need to care for a loved one without sacrificing their financial security. Hardworking Minnesotans should never have to choose between a paycheck and being there for family—but we need to make sure this program is rolled out responsibly and in a way that doesn’t add more burdens on businesses already struggling.

As a small business owner in Hawley, I’ve seen the impact of rising inflation, increasing minimum wages, and the day-to-day struggles of keeping a business afloat. That’s why I’m concerned about the financial strain this program could place on businesses, particularly when many are already stretched thin. I believe the program should be delayed until we can ensure that it’s fully prepared and that businesses can realistically comply without sacrificing their bottom line.

As we look at Minnesota’s budget forecast, it’s clear that we need to be smart about how we move forward. With a nearly $6 billion deficit in the coming years, it’s even more important that we balance family needs with the long-term sustainability of this program. The last thing we need is to add more pressure to small businesses or create a financial burden on the state’s economy.

That’s why I’m pushing for a balanced approach—one that helps families while also protecting job creators and ensuring that we aren’t creating an even bigger financial mess for future generations.

I’ll continue to fight for policies that support Minnesota’s workers and families while also being mindful of the impact on businesses and taxpayers. It’s about finding real solutions that work for everyone.

Fighting for Fairness: Preserving Girls' Sports in Minnesota

1

On Monday, I had the privilege of standing with my fellow Republicans and advocates to support a cause that should be common sense: keeping girls' sports fair and safe. House File 12, the Preserving Girls' Sports Act, aimed to ensure that only biological females compete in girls' athletics, protecting the progress and opportunities women have fought so hard for in sports.

Unfortunately, every House Democrat voted against the bill, allowing biological males to continue competing in girls’ sports. It’s frustrating, to say the least. We heard from female athletes and parents about the unfairness and safety risks they’re facing. One high school student even testified about breaking her wrist while competing against a male athlete.

This bill may have been tabled for now, but it’s not over. It can come back at any time, and we will keep fighting for fairness.

In addition to the fairness and safety concerns, passing this bill could save Minnesota taxpayers money during this budget deficit. Under President Trump's mandate, the Minnesota State High School League will not receive federal funding unless they agree to comply. If we don’t pass House File 12, Minnesotans will have to foot the bill. A simple yes vote would ensure that the state continues to receive these federal funds.

House Democrats need to stop wasting Minnesota tax dollars on waste, fraud, and abuse. It’s time to pass common-sense legislation that saves us money and helps us build our way out of this deficit. Let’s focus on the issues that really matter for Minnesota families.
