Minnesota House Votes on Rep. Knudsen's Born Alive Bill St. Paul, MN — Today, the Minnesota House of Representatives debated House File 24, also known as the Born Alive Rollback, authored by Representative Krista Knudsen (R-Lake Shore). The bill aims to extend legal protections to infants born alive following an abortion procedure, ensuring they receive immediate medical care and recognition under the law. The bill mandates that medical professionals provide immediate and appropriate care to preserve the life and health of these infants, ensuring they receive the same legal recognition and medical treatment as any other newborn. Supporters argue that HF 24 reinforces medical accountability and upholds fundamental human rights, while opponents raise concerns about its necessity given existing laws and its potential impact on medical practices. “Preserving the life and health of newborn babies is not controversial. These infants need protection and care regardless of the circumstances that led to their birth,” said Rep. Knudsen. “This is an opportunity to affirm the value of every life, ensure medical accountability, and uphold the most basic human rights.” Minnesota law does not currently provide protections to babies that survive an abortion procedure, so this bill corrects that. There is no implication on abortion procedures, only on protecting infants that survive them. The bill came to a vote and failed 67-66, with Republicans in support and Democrats against. |
