RELEASE: Rep. Dotseth: Minnesota’s Budget Deficit Worsens Due to Democrat Mismanagement

Thursday, March 6, 2025

ST. PAUL, MN – The latest budget forecast confirms what many Minnesotans feared—Democrats' reckless spending policies have put Minnesota on track for a nearly $6 billion deficit by Fiscal Year 2028-2029. This is $852 million worse than previous estimates and a clear warning sign that the state’s financial future is in jeopardy. Minnesota’s FY 2026-2027 balance has also shrunk to just $456 million, down $160 million from prior projections, as government spending continues to outpace revenue growth.

"This crisis is the direct result of two years of one-party rule and out-of-control government growth," said Rep. Jeff Dotseth (R-Silver Township). "Democrats spent every penny of our historic $18 billion surplus, raised taxes by $10 billion, and grew the state government by 40%. Now, they’re scrambling to shift the blame, but Minnesotans know better.”

Rather than prioritizing responsible budgeting and cutting waste, Democrats have created a structural deficit that will burden taxpayers and small businesses for years to come. Minnesota families are already struggling with rising costs, yet Democrats refuse to rein in spending or provide real tax relief.

“Minnesotans deserve better than this reckless spending spree,” Dotseth continued. “I will continue fighting for common-sense budgeting that puts taxpayers first, reins in government waste, and ensures our state lives within its means—before this financial crisis gets even worse.”
