Perryman Statement on Concerning New Law for School Resource Officers
ST. PAUL —Representative Bernie Perryman, R-St. Augusta, issued the following statement after the League of Minnesota Cities and the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association raised concerns regarding changes to student disciplinary policy, specifically language banning certain physical holds, even in extreme conditions.
"Ensuring safety in schools is one of the most important things we can do, but this new law takes away some of the tools school resource officers can use in extreme or aggressive situations," said Perryman. "Local law enforcement have expressed concerns about their ability to keep everyone safe without these tools, and many believe this will make schools less safe. Instead of undermining the ability of school resource officers to keep everyone safe, we should be empowering them to use common-sense and appropriate disciplinary tactics so that students can learn in a safe environment."
