Rep. Altendorf Legislative Update

Friday, January 24, 2025

WHAT’S NEW?

We are almost two weeks in to the legislative session. So what's been happening?

Before session even began, House Democrats took part in a super-secret swearing-in ceremony, because they don't want to show up to the Capitol with Republicans having a majority of members in the House. We're not even sure that this is legal, because...

by failing to show up on January 14 to session, it appears they violated the state law shown above. To date, not one House Democrat has shown up to do their job at the Capitol. Their side of the House floor is empty. But don't feel too badly for them, they are happily collecting their paychecks.

House Republicans are working. We are holding floor sessions and committee hearings and doing what voters expect us to do.

But while Democrats can't be bothered to actually earn the money the taxpayers are handing them, they are busy organizing their supporters to come the Capitol. Just this week, trans-rights protestors attempted to threaten members of the House Public Safety Committee, swearing and screaming in people's faces with a bullhorn.

Click here to see 20 minutes worth of profanity-laced embarrassment from these Democrat activists. Can you imagine the news coverage and reaction if someone tried doing this to a DFL lawmaker?

A special election for the currently-vacant 134th seat in the Minnesota House will be held in early to mid-March. Will Democrats' partisan pouting continue for another month and a half? Stay tuned.

LEGISLATION HIGHLIGHTS

FIGHTING FRAUD

Over the past few years, Minnesota’s taxpayers have lost more than $1 billion due to fraudulent activity in numerous state government programs. This week, House Republicans unveiled a series of proposals designed to stop this behavior.

Highlights of the proposals include:

  • Establishing a centralized Office of the Inspector General to investigate fraud
  • Mandating fraud reporting for state agencies
  • Equipping agencies with tools to identify and prevent fraudulent activity
  • Provide lawmakers with an evaluation of potential fraud risks before enacting any new program or policies.
  • Ensuring fraud prevention recommendations issued by the nonpartisan Office of the Legislative Auditor are being implemented by impacted agencies.

It’s high time we start putting some safeguards in place and start taking waste, fraud and abuse seriously in this state. Taxpayers expect their money to be used wisely by state government, not stolen by criminals who are looking to scam the system.

MARCH FOR LIFE

On Wednesday, I joined hundreds of Minnesotans from around the state to take part in the 2025 MCCL March for Life at the State Capitol.

According to MCCL, the event marks the anniversary of abortion’s legalization with an unforgettable remembrance of those excluded from protection by our state’s extreme pro-abortion laws—and a compelling call to rebuild a Minnesota where both moms and babies are valued and loved.

My thanks to all that attended and made their voices heard.
