SAINT PAUL, Minn. – This evening, the Minnesota House of Representatives voted to pass a bill to prevent the theft and sale of stolen catalytic converters, HF 30. Rep. Matt Norris (DFL - Blaine) co-authored and voted for the bill. He released the following statement:
“Too many in our community have been impacted by the spike in catalytic converter theft. With this bill we are taking a strong stance which will result in fewer stolen converters and greater peace of mind across the state,” said Rep. Norris. “I’ve heard loud and clear from my constituents that this bill and prevention efforts were a top priority. I am proud that I was able to vote ‘yes’ to finally get this important bill done.”
HF 30 seeks to crack down on the theft of catalytic converters by prohibiting anyone from possessing a used, unattached catalytic converter unless the owner has the vehicle identification number (VIN) for the vehicle, and the date the converter was removed from the vehicle. It prohibits the sale and purchase of catalytic converters by anyone other than registered scrap metal dealers, and would impose a fine of up to $1,000 for unlawful possession and sale.
Video of the floor debate will be uploaded on the House Information Youtube page.
