St. Paul, Minn. – Today marks two weeks until the August 15 filing deadline for the Property Tax Refund. Minnesotans are urged to check their eligibility to receive significantly enhanced property tax refunds championed by Rep. Matt Norris (DFL - Blaine) and passed this legislative session. Some of the most impactful new laws include:
Adjusting the special property tax refund so if your property taxes increased by more than 6% from 2022 to 2023, you’ll qualify for a refund of up to $2,500, regardless of your income level. This bill was authored by Rep. Norris
Increasing the Homestead Credit Refund and Renter’s Property Tax Refund by 20.572%.
Permitting homeowners who have an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) to qualify for homestead status and claim the Homestead Credit Refund.
Expanding the eligibility for the Senior Citizens Property Tax Deferral program so more seniors can age in their homes.
“I know property taxes have been rising for many households in recent years,” said Rep. Norris. “Because of this, I prioritized using some of the state’s surplus to offer property tax cuts at the state level and put money back in the pockets of Minnesotans, including those in Blaine and Lexington.”
Homeowners can find more information on how to file for the Property Tax Refund on the Department of Revenue webpage. Taxpayers who filed Form M1PR before June 14, 2023, and claimed the Homestead Credit Refund or Renter’s Property Tax Refund should have their refund adjusted upward automatically by the Department of Revenue. However, taxpayers who filed before June 14, 2023, and are newly eligible for the special property tax refund (if your property taxes increased by more than 6%) should file an amended return using Form M1PRX and complete the Special Refund section.
