This week has been defined by long nights working hard on behalf of Blaine and Lexington as debates on our budget bills stretch on. Here is an update from the Capitol:
1. Bills Headed to the Governor’s Desk - Successful Legislation!
Two of my bills, the Veterans and Military Affairs Policy Bill and the Housing Co-op Bill are on their way to the Governor’s Desk!
I’m proud to see these broadly bipartisan bills which support our veterans and make it easier to create resident-owned co-ops make it past the finish line!
2. Manufactured Housing Rally - Advocating for Affordable Housing
Thanks to all the manufactured housing residents and advocates who came to the Capitol this week!
I highlighted the work I’ve done the past two years, including investments in park infrastructure and home improvements and reforms to help residents band together to buy their park.
However, we still have important work to do in the future to protect residents from unreasonable rent increases by large private equity firms buying up parks, and I’m committed to working with residents to accomplish this goal.
3. Tax Bill to be Heard - Helping Working and Middle Class Minnesotans
The House is set to vote on our 2024 Supplemental Tax Budget Bill. This bill includes a few provisions I worked on closely including:
Expanding the Child Tax Credit to include 18-year-olds;
Allowing the option for counties to abate property taxes on land owned by land banks to make it easier to create and preserve affordable housing and main street businesses;
Eliminating tax consequences for survivors of abuse who have their coerced debt forgiven under the bill I passed last year.
These are common sense provisions that will improve the economic outlook for many Minnesotans across the state. I’m proud that these provisions are part of this strong bill!
