State Rep. Brion Curran statement on the Passage of the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act in Congress

Wednesday, January 15, 2025

St. Paul, MN – On Tuesday, House Republicans in Congress passed legislation to ban transgender women and girls from participating in sports at schools and institutions receiving federal funds, with a 218-206 vote

Representative Brion Curran, House Chair of the Minnesota Queer Legislators Caucus, released the following statement:

“The continued public crucifixion of trans Americans by MAGA supporters is sickening and alarming. GOP extremists are subservient to the incoming Trump Administration, saying they ‘are protecting women and the foundation of our society’ but in actuality they are inciting more political violence and harm to a vulnerable community that makes up less than 1% of the nation’s total population yet since 2013, at least 308 transgender women have lost their lives to fatal violence—over four in five (82.8%) of all cases identified. While debating this bill which incites violence through policy, Rep. Nancy Mace (GOP) physically Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D), who is a Black woman. It is a blatant contradiction to use violent rhetoric while passing a bill under the guise of protection.

“Minnesota is still a Trans Refuge state. The Queer Caucus will continue to defend legislation protecting our LGBTQIA2S+ community, whether here in Minnesota or speaking out against actions in Congress. In Minnesota, we passed progressive legislations to protect our trans community, by establishing a task force on preventing violence against Latine women, girls, and LGBTQIA2S+ people, expanding healthcare by requiring health insurance plans to cover gender-affirming care, ending the LGBTQIA2S+ panic defense, and more.”
