Legislative Update – July 24, 2023
Dear Neighbors,
I would like to invite you all to join me, Representative Ginny Klevorn, and Senator Bonnie Westlin at our upcoming District 42 Town Hall! This is an official, nonpartisan event and will be hosted at Plymouth City Hall on Monday, July 31 from 7:00-8:00 p.m. We will be discussing the 2023 legislative session and taking questions from the audience. You can RSVP and invite your friends and neighbors here and submit questions here.
Governor Walz Visits Plymouth!
Last week I was proud to join Governor Tim Walz as he visited Buhler, a food equipment manufacturer right here in Plymouth, to kick off a statewide workforce tour and spend a day in the life with manufacturing professionals!
This session, Minnesota invested millions in job training and workforce development to fill high-growth, high-demand jobs across the state, including in manufacturing, public safety, technology, caring professions, and education. The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) is working with companies like Buhler to provide job training in the manufacturing industry.
New Laws Going into Effect
Many laws passed by the legislature this session had an effective date of July 1 or August 1 and will be going into effect next week. This includes appropriations from our major budget bills along with countless other provisions. House Nonpartisan Staff has put together a document highlighting some of the major laws that went into effect on July 1 and those going into effect on August 1.
I have also been receiving questions regarding the legislature’s bill to legalize adult-use cannabis. Our legislation created an Office of Cannabis Management to oversee the legal market and other aspects related to legalization, and as of August 1st, Minnesotans will be allowed to possess and use certain amounts of cannabis and cannabis products. You can find more information on a list of topics, including information for consumers, medical cannabis patients, businesses, and more here: https://cannabis.state.mn.us/.
