Legislative Update – January 22, 2025

Dear Neighbors,

Last week, I shared with you the concerning situation happening in the Minnesota House. I’m sorry to report that the situation has not improved, and Minnesota Republicans are continuing to threaten to take power they did not win in November and kick out a legally elected representative.

Last Tuesday, the Minnesota House was set to meet to open the legislative session. Unfortunately, House Republicans chose to attempt an illegitimate power grab, and throw out an election they lost. They are now holding sham sessions and taking unlawful constitutional actions, which are currently under legal challenge. The state Supreme Court will hear arguments from both sides on Thursday, and I hope they will come to a decision quickly.

This power grab is unprecedented, and it will do lasting harm to our institution, the rule of law, and democracy. More importantly, House Republicans are attempting to silence half the state, who voted for DFL Representatives, including our district. If they succeed, Republicans have pledged to roll back policies that you, I, and our neighbor's support. I would potentially be kicked off committees, and my ability to pass bills that help our district would be severely limited.

That’s why I’m standing with my colleagues and Minnesotans around the state to protect the will of the voters, deny the Republicans’ illegitimate power grab, and get back to building a future in Minnesota that works better for everyone.

Working for Our District

Just as I do in the months when the legislature is not in session, I’ve been taking meetings to focus on the issues ahead for our community, local organizations, and you, my constituents. Here’s a sample of some of the work I’ve been doing recently:

  • I’ve been working on multiple pieces of legislation that address infrastructure needs in our community, and address challenges in the areas of health care, protecting our climate, and more.
  • I met with Assistant Hennepin County Administrator Dan Rogan to discuss community and county priorities that we can work together on to address this year.
  • I was pleased to go “home” to the Plymouth City Council meeting to witness the swearing-in of our newest Council Members, Joel Spoonheim, Scott Aldrich, and Kim Nelson. I’m looking forward to working with the Council for the benefit of the community and our residents.
  • I met with union folks who shared their experience and perspectives. Supporting unions is an important part of building a Minnesota that works for everyone, and it was good to hear more about the impact of our legislation on people’s lives.
  • I attended the Hennepin County Legislative Delegation meeting, where we discussed our infrastructure and public health needs, all while emphasizing public safety and the environment.

I hope Republicans abandon their illegitimate power grab, come back to the negotiating table, and respect the reality of a tied 67-67 House, but until they do, I will be focused on the work ahead for our district. If you have not already, I’d encourage you to follow my official Facebook page where I will be posting more frequently during these unprecedented times.
