SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Yesterday, the Minnesota House passed HF 7, the 100% Clean Electricity by 2040 bill, requiring that the state’s utilities use entirely carbon-free sources for electricity production by 2040. Rep. Larry Kraft (DFL - St. Louis Park) co-authored and voted for the legislation.
“I am so proud that my colleagues and I passed this bill,” said Rep. Kraft. “We know young people are the most concerned about the climate crisis, but also the most hopeful that we can make a change. They are counting on policymakers at all levels of government to enact policies that will fortify their future. When young people initiated a bold climate policy in my city, other cities followed. So now, it is time for Minnesota to be a leader not only for our state but for the rest of the nation as well.”
This bill removes barriers to setting up carbon-free and renewable power sources and invests in green energy jobs right here in Minnesota. This would put Minnesota on track with over twenty other states that have also adopted similar goals.
The Senate Energy, Utilities, Environment, and Climate Committee passed the bill yesterday, and Gov. Walz has signaled he will sign the bill into law.
