Honoring our Veterans

Friday, June 7, 2024
Rehm Banner

Dear Neighbors,

I would first like to start my email with extending my condolences to the family, colleagues, and friends of Minneapolis Police Officer Jamal Mitchell, who was tragically killed in the line of duty last Thursday. All of our public safety workers deserve to return home safe after every shift. My heart goes out to the loved ones of Officer Mitchell and I wish peace to the people involved in this tragic incident.

Yesterday marked the 80th Anniversary of D-Day, the Invasion of Normandy; a critical moment in World War II in which Americans fought with allied troops to save the world. Kare 11 covered the amazing story of Minnesota WWII Vet Les Schrenk from our neighboring city of Bloomington who was able to attend the ceremony with leaders across the globe. I especially appreciate his words acknowledging how pivotal it is to research and remember. He says, “It’s part of history, and I think trying to keep history alive is very important.”

Last year, the legislature passed, with my support, legislation to require Holocaust education to be included in Minnesota schools’ Social Studies curriculum. Teaching history in its entirety equips us to understand the present, learn from past mistakes, and shape a better future. This is one of the best ways we can honor these veterans of the Greatest Generation.

Update on Free Entry to the Arboretum for Disabled Minnesota Veterans

And speaking of supporting our veterans, I’m excited to share an update on the new measure I carried to grant free entry to our treasured Minnesota Landscape Arboretum for all disabled Minnesota veterans. The legislation was signed into law three weeks ago, and I’ve spoken with Arboretum staff. They’ve informed me that they are already diligently working through the logistics to update this new change and are looking forward to beginning this initiative.

Nature has healing powers, and giving access to this amenity to those who’ve sacrificed so much isn’t just a way of saying ‘thank you;’ it can make a big difference for veterans’ mental health. I’m thrilled about how many people this will help.
