Legislative Update from Rep. Bianca Virnig

Rep. Virnig Legislative Update header

Neighbors,

This week was full of late night floor sessions as we work to pass supplemental budget packages to build on last year’s historic progress. In addition, conference committees have begun meeting to reconcile differences between House and Senate bills, and I’m incredibly excited to have been named by the Speaker to serve on the Elections conference committee! I’m looking forward to diving into the legislation and being a part of the final product.

On the floor, we also recently passed a strong Tenants’ Rights Policy Bill, which includes provisions to safeguard tenants’ right to organize, protect tenant survivors of domestic violence, clarify tenants’ rights to emergency services, prohibit rental discrimination based on public assistance, and more. More details in the bill are included here.

On a completely different note, we also recently passed legislation to allow a digital image of a hunting or fishing license as proof if the person doesn’t have the physical license with them.

These are just a few great examples of how House Democrats are working to make life better for Minnesotans. It’s incredibly fulfilling work, and I’m honored every day to get to work for you!

Here’s an update on some other happenings here in Saint Paul.

Kids at the Capitol

Last week, Black Hawk Middle School had their day on the hill! My daughter’s 6th grade class was treated to a full tour of the capitol and a chance to experience the House floor before they made a stop at Minnehaha Falls.

Arbor Day Celebration

Friday, April 26th is Arbor Day, and DFLers are taking action to protect our environment and honor trees' vital role in our ecosystem. This year we are investing millions in tree planting grants for communities around our state.

Last Thursday on the House floor, members of the House Environment Committee distributed White Oak, Black Cherry, and Cranberry Bush saplings from Schumacher’s Nursery in Heron Lake, Minnesota. I’m looking forward to bringing my Black Cherry sapling back home and watching it grow!
