Legislative Update 1.17.25

Friday, January 17, 2025

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

With this legislative session now underway, I want to take the time to say thank you for putting your trust in me as your state representative. It’s been an eventful week, and I thought I’d share a few updates about what’s happening at the Capitol and the work I’m doing to make our communities and the State of Minnesota a better place to live.

Family

First Week of Session

On Tuesday, I took the oath of office to officially begin my first term as your state representative. I’m proud to be serving District 2A and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to make your voices heard in St. Paul.

The Debate Surrounding Quorum

You may have heard conflicting claims about the definition of a quorum.  Simply put, a quorum is defined as the minimum number of people that can be present to make a meeting legitimate. The Minnesota State Constitution states that a quorum in the Minnesota House is the majority of all the members of the House. Typically, that majority of the House would be 68 of 134 total members.  However, with the Democrat Candidate for 40B being found ineligible to hold office, a majority of all members would be 67 of the 133 total members. While this is challenged and debated, I will continue to show up to work and find reasonable solutions to the issues facing our community.

Committee Assignments

On Thursday, I attended my first meeting for the committee on Judiciary Finance and Civil Law. I look forward to working with my fellow committee members to pass reasonable and effective legislation with regards to our justice system.
