Legislative Update

Friends and Neighbors,

This has been a historic week for House Republicans and the State of Minnesota. Late Wednesday night, leadership from both parties reached an organizing agreement, enabling official House business to resume. The following day, on the House Floor, we successfully voted to appoint Lisa Demuth as Speaker of the House.

A Tremendous Victory for Republicans

Thursday afternoon's floor session marks the first time in six years that Minnesota’s House of Representatives will be led by a Republican Speaker. Through the last four weeks of hard-fought negotiations, Speaker Demuth and Majority Leader Niska secured a deal that will alter the face of Minnesota’s political landscape.

This could not have been accomplished without all the public support, so I really want to give a special thank you to all of you who made your voices heard and demanded a government that is accountable and works for you!

A Breakdown:

  • Republican Control of Committees: Republicans will chair and have majorities in ALL committees through the five-week period leading up to the March 11th special election in Roseville.
  • Special Election Impact: If the Roseville seat returns to Democratic control after the special election, the committee structure will shift to a split roster with co-chairs.
  • Stability for Republicans: Regardless of the special election’s outcome, Speaker Demuth will stay on as House Speaker, even if the House returns to a 67-67 tie – ensuring that Republicans will have a say in Minnesota’s political future.
  • Ending Fraud, Waste, and Abuse: House Republicans will lead the Fraud and Agency Oversight Committee in investigating state government programs. Republicans will chair this committee for the next two years AND have a 5-3 voting majority over Democrats.

Moving Forward

Minnesotans can look forward to House leadership that’s ready to hit the ground running. For the past four weeks, we have been crafting legislation aimed at tackling Minnesota’s affordability crisis, improving the safety of our communities, lowering our energy costs, and ensuring our schools can provide quality education for the leaders of tomorrow.
