Legislative Update - The House GOP’s Power Grab

Dear Neighbors,

We’ve had a significant update since my email last Thursday. On Friday, the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled that the attempted power grab by House Republicans these last two weeks was unconstitutional, invalidating the Speaker election, floor sessions, and committee hearings they’ve held since the 14th. The ruling provides clarity to something my DFL colleagues and I have known since November: Minnesotans want us to work together.

Republicans tried to go it alone. They tried to take power the voters didn’t give them, and instead of providing legitimacy to their actions, House Democrats have been conducting our work in our communities, for our communities. Rep. Liish Kozlowski and I submitted an op-ed to the Duluth News Tribune on this topic.

Until House Republicans agree to seat State Representative Brad Tabke and work with us on a plan to govern the Minnesota House together, I’ll continue to do everything I can to properly represent you while pushing for that compromise.

Part of representing our community means having conversations, meeting with leaders and organizations, and preparing legislation. I’m doing all of those things right now, just not at an office in St. Paul.

CIRRUS AIRCRAFT

Sometimes it’s a Zoom call with members and staff, a discussion with colleagues on bolstering Minnesota’s entrepreneurs, a tour of a training center with labor partners, or a visit with a local business like Cirrus Aircraft. This is an important component of the work that needs to be done.

We also have to set Minnesota’s budget for the next two years and work on solidifying a bonding bill. Every day that Republicans refuse the honor the will of the voters and refuse to negotiate in good faith, we have less time to complete that critical work.

It’s a confusing, ever-changing situation, but if you have any questions or comments on the Minnesota House, always feel free to contact my office. You can reach me and my office at rep.pete.johnson@house.mn.gov or (651) 296-4246. Also feel free to follow my official legislative Facebook page, where I’m posting regular updates of my meetings in our district and around the state.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Pete Johnson
