Rep. Sexton's Statement on Growing Budget Deficit St. Paul, MN — Rep. Tom Sexton (R-Waseca) released the following statement after the February budget forecast released on March 6th projected a decrease in the surplus for FY 2026-2027 and an increase in the deficit for FY 2028-2029. The Governor’s budget forecast also indicates that state spending growth is expected to outpace state revenue growth through fiscal year 2029, which contributes to an ever-widening budget deficit of $6,000,000,000. "We must get our State spending under control! Last session, we saw Democrats erase an $18 billion surplus by overspending and then increase taxes by $10 billion dollars to spend more! Overall, government grew by 40% due to their reckless mismanagement of our money and lack of fiscal responsibility overall. We cannot allow this to happen again," said Rep. Sexton. "In order to solve this problem we need to take a serious look at our spending habits and make drastic changes to our budget, not continue to raise taxes and place the burden on all Minnesotans." ### |
