Saint Paul, MN. – On Wednesday, February 26, Republicans on the House Taxes Committee passed legislation that cuts the only dedicated state funding source for the critical Meals on Wheels program. Meals on Wheels is a lifeline for vulnerable seniors and people with disabilities, enabling these Minnesotans to live full and independent lives. Rep. Aisha Gomez (DFL-Minneapolis), DFL lead of the Taxes Committee, released the following statement:
“Our tax bills show the public who we are. They are an opportunity to put our money where our mouths are and fund the things we say we value. What we learned this week is that the House GOP does not value our seniors and neighbors with disabilities who rely on food delivery support services. Apparently, facilitating independent living for these Minnesotans and providing food security is not a value that the House GOP holds. With food insecurity on the rise, and economic insecurity and devastating funding cuts from the federal government on the horizon, I cannot imagine a worse time to slash these life giving programs. I call on my Republican colleagues to reverse course and preserve funding for Meals on Wheels.”
