DFL-chaired Capital Investment Hearing investigates Trump Admin’s impact on Minnesota Infrastructure

Tuesday, March 18, 2025

St. Paul, MN - Today, in one of the first hearings chaired by the House DFL during the 2025 Legislative Session, Capital Investment Committee Co-Chair Fue Lee (DFL - Minneapolis) held a hearing to investigate the extent to which the policies of the Trump administration jeopardize funding for infrastructure projects throughout the state.

“We can’t build a better Minnesota on shifting sands,” said Rep. Lee. “With worthy infrastructure projects having their federal funding in doubt, Minnesotans deserve answers. The funding freezes coming from the Trump administration don’t solely impact Washington D.C.; they’re delaying crucial projects in rural, suburban, and urban communities throughout Minnesota.

“Today’s hearing showed that more clarity is needed when it comes to promised federal dollars. The federal proposal eliminating tax-exempted municipal bonds to fund tax cuts for the wealthy also provides urgency in passing a bonding bill soon. I’ll be working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to find the answers our state needs and deliver a bonding bill our communities deserve.”

Today’s committee hearing featured testimony from state agencies and organizations on the status of federal infrastructure funds, the impact of the potential elimination of tax-exempt status for municipal bonds, and the latest debt capacity forecast for Minnesota.

Testifiers included officials from Minnesota Management and Budget, the Minnesota Public Facilities Authority, the National Conference of State Legislatures, and others.

Materials from today’s hearing can be found on the committee’s webpage. Video of the hearing will be available on the House Public Information YouTube channel
