Legislative Update

Dear Neighbors,

We have been incredibly busy at the Capitol as committees wrap up and key deadlines are met. Policy bills have been moved out of committee, and finance bills are now advancing as we continue working to address Minnesota’s budget.

One of our biggest challenges has been negotiating with the Democrats to correct the state budget after they spent the state’s $18 billion surplus, raised taxes by $10 billion, and increased the state budget by $20 billion – a 40-percent hike – in 2023. Leaving Minnesota with a $6 billion deficit. House Republicans are stepping up to begin fixing this financial crisis. While it will take a long-term approach to fully correct the damage, we are committed to restoring fiscal responsibility and ensuring Minnesota taxpayers aren’t left to pay for reckless spending.

In addition, I have done several interviews regarding Governor Walz’s mandate requiring employees to return to work in person 50% of the time. The reality is that we no longer have the space or parking capacity to accommodate all employees, creating a logistical nightmare that the Governor has yet to address. This is his problem to solve, not ours, and it’s time for real leadership and planning rather than empty mandates.

This week I introduced HF 2824, a bipartisan bill, which would allow all continuous open season for bass fishing. By allowing year-round bass fishing, this bill supports our outdoor recreation economy and encourages greater access for families and individuals who love to fish.

This week I visited with several chambers of commerce. I appreciate them for making the trip to the Capitol and discussing issues that are important to them.

I also want to take a moment to recognize and appreciate all the staff members who have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to assist with negotiations. Their dedication and hard work have been instrumental in keeping this process moving forward, and I am grateful for their efforts.

We will continue fighting for responsible budgeting, practical solutions, and policies that serve all Minnesotans.
