Hard Decisions Ahead – No Magic Money Tree

Dear Northlanders,

There is no magic money tree. There are hard choices to be made in the 2025 legislative session to complete a balanced budget by May 19, 2025.

Just two years ago, Minnesota had an $18.5 billion surplus. However, the financial reality in 2025 looks much different. In fact, a $6 billion deficit is projected over the next few years—unless we course correct. Why? Because choices have consequences.

What Happened?

In 2023–2024:

  • New government programs were created.
  • Government grew by 40%.
  • More than $10 billion in new taxes were added.
  • New agencies and employees were added in St. Paul.
  • Many programs were funded for only 1–2 years, with no long-term funding or budgeting for future expenses.

A Time for Hope

Easter is a season of hope. Naturally, many were excited to see historic funding across Minnesota in 2023. But now in 2025, the mood is more somber. As your State Representative, it is my priority to offer hope by focusing on responsible, prioritized spending.

We must recognize the difference between funding core services and overextending government into new, unsustainable programs. I understand that no one wants to see programs defunded—but the simple truth is: we must return to funding our core services, ensuring key objectives are met for our communities and our state.

Looking Ahead: Session and District Events

When the Easter break ends, we return to session on April 21, 2025, and will likely be working 7 days a week until the session ends on May 19, 2025.

I will return home for events on Saturdays or Sundays if the schedule allows. After the session ends, I look forward to being back in every corner of our district.

Honoring Former State Representative Mary Murphy

On Monday, April 21, 2025, we will honor a legacy of service in our state. The day has been designated Mary Murphy Day.

Rep. Mary Murphy served 46 years and was the longest-serving woman in the Minnesota House of Representatives. Throughout my healthcare career, I had the honor of meeting with Rep. Murphy on issues impacting seniors and always found her to be kind, gracious, and deeply committed to her community.

When I ran for office, our camaraderie continued. We shared meals at the Two Harbors and Proctor fairgrounds and enjoyed many heartfelt conversations. Mary Murphy left big shoes to fill. I hope you will take a moment to pause and thank a woman who made a lasting difference in our district and across Minnesota.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Judy's Cafe Team in Two Harbors for receiving the 2025 Aging Impact award from the Arrowhead area agency on aging. They received this award for great community space and fostering social connections. With a 40% increase in loneliness and mental health following the pandemic we all learned we are better together!
