Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and Majority Leader Ryan Winkler released the following statements:
“This morning, we are overcome with grief at the loss of Daunte Wright,” said Speaker Hortman. “House DFLers are committed to providing public safety for all Minnesotans, and we will continue our work toward reform and accountability. Chair Moran led our work last summer to enact a tougher standard for the use of deadly force. This higher standard went into effect on March 1st. The work we did last summer was important, and our caucus will work together to determine our next steps.”
“One thing is clear — Daunte Wright should be alive. His death points to the reality that our state is fundamentally unjust for Black Minnesotans,” said Majority Leader Winkler. “Mr. Wright’s family and community are grappling with unimaginable trauma. We need answers, body cam footage, and protection and justice for Black lives.”
