ST. PAUL – Minnesota’s 2022 legislative session began Monday and Rep. Joe McDonald, R-Delano, said tax relief and improved public safety are at the forefront this year.
“Let’s show Minnesotans we are listening to them by hitting the ground running on tax relief and improving public safety this year,” McDonald said. “The state has a historic surplus of $7.7 billion and, while that’s better than a shortfall, it also is a clear indication Minnesotans are overtaxed. Our focus this session should be to return these surplus dollars to the taxpayers; it cannot be viewed as a license to spend even more on bloated government programs. Public safety also is a top priority this year and I look forward to working on solutions to help get a handle on the surge in violent crime that has gone unchecked in our state.
“We also need to work this year to tighten the parameters by which a governor can exert unilateral authority in our state. Minnesotans largely were deprived of the representative system of government provided under our Constitution for nearly a year and a half as we lived under the governor’s unilateral rule. Peacetime emergencies may have their place and time, but we need more checks and balances to prevent emergency powers from being abused like this ever again.”
McDonald said he welcomes correspondence throughout the session and encourages District 29A residents to call (651) 296-4336 or email rep.joe.mcdonald@house.mn to get in touch.
