Tuesday, Governor Dayton signed the bills that will comprise the 2018-19 budget as well as the bill providing tax reform and relief and a bonding bill to finance infrastructure projects across the state.
Minnesotans should be proud of the compromise that defined this session of divided government. With Republican majorities in the House and Senate and Democrat Mark Dayton as Governor, we were able to come to agreement on the largest tax reform and relief package in nearly two decades while also making the largest investment in roads and bridges without raising taxes.
The Republican-led tax bill will mean more than $650 million in tax relief—the largest tax cut in nearly two decades. It includes relief for seniors on social security, college graduates with student loan debt, and property tax relief for farmers and Minnesota businesses. In addition, Republicans championed and the legislature approved the largest investment in road and bridge infrastructure in state history without an increase in the gas tax or license tab fees.
While the governor did sign these bills, he also took an unprecedented and unconstitutional step to defund the Legislature, attempting to silence both the House and Senate for the next four years. It isn't right to eliminate an entire branch of government just because we have different principles -- Minnesotans like you elected both of us. After such a productive session, his behavior is disappointing. As a result, the Legislature is seeking outside counsel in an effort to defend your voice and your representation at the Capitol. I will keep you up to date as this develops.

Save the date: Capitol Grand Opening
After a four year and $310 million restoration, the Minnesota State Capitol is now open to the public. Our beautiful Capitol has been returned to its former glory and is ready for the next 100 years! To commemorate this special occasion and invite Minnesotans back to the People’s House, there will be a Grand Opening Celebration held on August 11, 12, and 13. The celebration will have something for everyone – fireworks, concerts, demonstrations by the artisans that worked on the restoration, behind the scenes tours, and much more. Most of the events are free, or offered at a very low cost. Please mark your calendars and plan to celebrate the People’s House this summer!
