Statement from Rep. Duane Quam on the Scheduled Release of Ax Murderer David Brom

Friday, July 18, 2025

ST. PAUL, MN — Representative Duane Quam (R-Byron) released the following statement after it was announced that ax murderer David Brom would receive an early release from prison.

“The scheduled release of David Brom, a man convicted of murdering his parents and two younger siblings with an ax in 1988, is a direct result of a 2023 law, passed by the Democrat trifeca, that allows violent juvenile offenders with life sentences to become eligible for release after just 30 years.

This is not a question of legal technicality, it is a question of justice. Brom was sentenced to three consecutive life terms, a sentence reflecting the brutality and heinous nature of his multiple murders. Democrats’ law allowing the release of an ax murderer completely undermines the very concept of a sentence being relational to the crime and sends a troubling message to victims and the public.

This case is especially painful for our community, which still remembers the trauma of those horrific events. I’ve heard from constituents who are shocked that such a brutal act no longer warrants permanent removal from society under current law.

Minnesota must revisit this misguided policy. Public safety and justice for victims must remain the foundation of our legal system.”
