ST. PAUL – Rep. Jim Nash, R-Waconia, issued the following statement regarding news today that Watertown-Mayer Primary School in Watertown and Central Elementary in Norwood Young America are receiving school safety grant funding totaling $287,000 combined. Last session, the legislature approved and Governor Dayton signed into law $25 million in capital investment funds that schools could apply for to make physical safety improvements. The Minnesota Department of Education is expected to formally announce the grant allocations in a news release later this afternoon.
“Republicans recognized that improving school safety was a priority for all Minnesotans, and we led the way,” said Nash. “It’s great to see our local schools taking advantage of these grants to create a safer environment for local students. Next session, I want to continue building off our successes and keep improving school safety in our area and around the state.”
The legislature approved an additional $25 million in school safety grants as part of the supplemental budget bill, but those funds were vetoed by Governor Dayton.
