SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Last Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a 6-3 decision overturning Roe v. Wade which had guaranteed the constitutional right to an abortion.
Rep. Jen Schultz (DFL – Duluth) issued the following statement:
“The right to an abortion has been guaranteed for 50 years on the premise women are able to make their own personal health care decisions. This is a devastating ruling, and as many states proceed with extreme abortion bans, countless pregnant people – especially those from low-income backgrounds and people of color – will face perilous health care outcomes. While the court’s ruling is an outrageous setback for our freedom and liberties, this fight isn’t over. We all have power with our voices, and we must all stand up to make it clear we will not accept politicians cruelly limiting access to health care.”
Rep. Liz Olson (DFL – Duluth) issued the following statement:
“While this news from the court had been expected, it doesn’t diminish how disheartening it is. Everyone deserves the ability to make their own health care decisions, including whether to seek an abortion, but this decision will embolden politicians who seek more control over women’s reproductive rights. No matter how awful this situation is for people who are pregnant or may become pregnant, we can’t cede ground to Republican lawmakers and their allies on the bench as they seek to further restrict our freedoms. I stand with our community fully committed to not only reject any proposed extreme abortion bans, but to support measures to make Minnesota a leader in reproductive health care.”
