Dear Neighbors,
I’m pleased to share that Tuesday was the first day of the 2017 Legislative Session in St. Paul. I was officially sworn in as the state representative for District 7B. I am honored and humbled to represent Duluth at the State Capitol. I am excited to get to work on your priorities and break down partisan barriers that are holding back progress toward our bright future.
Economic forecasts revealed early last month that the Minnesota economy continues to remain stable with a projected $1.4 billion budget surplus this year.
The budget forecast certainly is positive news - Minnesota’s economy is stable and it continues to grow and recover. However, there are clear areas where we have more work to do. I have already heard from several of you about the rising costs of health insurance for individuals on the private market. The issue of premium relief needs immediate attention from the legislature as we work to reform and improve the affordability of insurance in the future.
Other issues facing legislators include the urgent need for a long-term and sustainable transportation plan that will fund road and bridge repairs throughout the state and maintain strong transit options for residents in every corner of Minnesota. We also must come together to raise incomes and job opportunities for Minnesotans and make sure our economy is working for everyone. We can do that by passing a robust bonding bill, like the one Governor Dayton released yesterday that includes important projects for Duluth public infrastructure.
As we get going this legislative session I look forward to keeping in contact with the constituents of my district while also learning how to be the best legislator I can be to advance the priorities of our community. I look forward to working together to ensure a Minnesota where everyone can feel safe, heard and live in joy.
