Rep. Olson: the Capitol to the Community - 5.1.2019

Wednesday, May 1, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

There are about three weeks left in the legislative session, and the House has just completed work on our budget proposals. I wanted to share this update from the State Capitol with you.

PRIDE

Yesterday, the House passed the last of our DFL budget packages. Leading up to this legislative session, we’ve heard Minnesotans’ dreams and aspirations, as well as their challenges and fears. We know Minnesotans care about one another, and want to see each other succeed. Assembling a two-year state budget is our most important responsibility, and I’m extremely proud that our budget truly reflects these values most important to Minnesotans. Our budget invests in our world-class schools, protects affordable health care for Minnesotans, expands economic security for families, and keeps communities safe to make our state work better for everyone. As we head toward a compromise with the Senate, I’ll keep working to ensure these key values are protected.

EXCITEMENT

We’ve gathered ideas, priorities, experiences and stories from Minnesotans in our work this legislative session. I’m excited that our House DFL budget is a direct result of the engagement and input from Minnesotans who have made their voices heard. Parents, teachers, students and community members have been concerned about school funding levels not even meeting inflation, so we’ve made historic investments in E-12 education over the next two years. As gun violence leads to the tragic loss of too many lives, we’re increasing safety with criminal background checks and Red Flag laws. Impacts of climate change are looming, and youth have shared how critical action is to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. As a result, we’ve set an ambitious goal to reach 100 percent renewable energy by 2050. Families have shared heartbreaking stories about how high prescription drug prices have affected them, sometimes with tragic consequences. With this inspiration, we’re holding Big Pharma accountable, increasing transparency, and making lifesaving medications more affordable.

These are just a few examples of the bold steps we’ve made in our budget to strengthen the outlook for our state. I’m grateful for the Minnesotans who, in telling their stories and sharing their ideas, have made this work possible.

ACCESS

This session, I’m excited about our work producing the Minnesota Values Podcast, opening up access to what happens at the State Capitol to a wider audience. In today’s episode, we chat with Rep. Tina Liebling, Chair of the House Health and Human Services Finance Committee, about our efforts to expand access to affordable health care for Minnesotans. You can listen to the podcast on SoundCloud here, and it’s also available on iTunes and Stitcher.

I value hearing from you! Please don’t hesitate to contact me anytime.

Sincerely,

Liz Olson
State Representative
