Update from the Capitol - May 9, 2019

Thursday, May 9, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

We’re down to 11 days remaining in the Legislative Session. The Minnesota House has approved our Minnesota Values Budget and in doing so, approved our Minnesota Values Plan, the top 10 bills we introduced this legislative session. These initiatives ranged from greater support for students, to earned sick and safe time and paid family and medical leave, solutions to prevent gun violence, making health care affordable and more, and are included within our budget proposals.

Rep. Ryan Winkler, the House Majority Leader, joined Rep. Jamie Long and me for the latest episode of the Minnesota Values Podcast where we discuss in-depth where things stand. You can listen here on SoundCloud or find the podcast on iTunes or Stitcher.

Currently, House/Senate Conference Committees are meeting to identify and discuss differences between each chamber’s version of the budget, and to eventually reach a compromise. Unfortunately, the Senate’s budget proposals totally exclude the priorities the House has worked on all session to build a state that works better for everyone.

To ensure that all of this good work makes it into law, the Senate needs to come on board with their support. For that to happen, they need to hear from Minnesotans for whom all of this is important. Here are the Senators serving on some key conference committees, and taking a minute or two to contact them in support of our Minnesota Values Budget can make a difference.

The budget we’ve spent the last four months assembling, and the priorities we’ve included in it, reflects what we've heard is important to people across our state. I recognize that we’ve reached the stage where they only way to move forward is to compromise, but I remain committed to core values of Minnesotans, like great schools, affordable health care, and economic security for all families.

I appreciate hearing from you! Please don’t hesitate to contact me anytime.

Sincerely,

Liz Olson
