Rep. Olson: The Capitol to the Community – 1.30.2020

Thursday, January 30, 2020

Dear Neighbors,

The legislative session is right around the corner, set to convene on February 11 at noon. I’m looking forward to joining my colleagues again at the Capitol as we continue our work to ensure all Minnesotans have the opportunity to succeed and thrive.

Climate Action Caucus

original

The looming impact of climate change is one of the issues I hear about most frequently from constituents. Minnesota youth have been particularly mobilized and last year, thousands of young Minnesotans gathered at the Capitol and in more than a dozen cities to call for action. To show our support, a group of legislators created the Climate Action Caucus, and I’m proud to be a member of this group to develop a bold, comprehensive plan to address the climate crisis.

The caucus has held a series of community conversations to discuss how climate change impacts our day-to-day lives in areas including transportation, housing, public health, and education. I encourage you to learn more about our work at the Climate Action Caucus website, and if you’d like to receive updates from the caucus via email, please subscribe here.

Real ID

Real ID

Starting October 1, regular drivers’ licenses will no longer be sufficient to board an airplane or enter certain federal facilities. If you don’t have a passport, you will need an upgraded Real ID-compliant license or ID card. The state Driver and Vehicle Services Office, the airlines, and the Transportation Security Administration are all working to educate Minnesotans about this significant change for air travel. An infographic showing common examples of Real ID required documents is available here.?

Minnesotans who have questions or concerns about the status of their license or ID card can contact the Department of Vehicle Services by email at dvs.driverslicense@state.mn.us or by phone at 651-297-3298. Include your full name and date of birth with your question in the email.

2020 Census

census

Preparations for the 2020 Census are underway, and every person living in the 50 states, District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories will be counted in this effort. The census provides critical data that lawmakers, business owners, teachers, and many others use. Billions of dollars in investments in hospitals, fire departments, schools, roads, and other resources from the federal government are often based on census data. Of course, congressional and legislative maps are redrawn based upon the census to ensure everyone has a fair say in choosing our elected officials.

Ensuring everyone gets counted is a massive undertaking, and the Census Bureau is looking to hire 45,000 workers in Minnesota. In St. Louis County, pay starts at $21.50. Full-time, part-time, weekend, and evening shifts available. For more information and instructions on applying, click here.

Input from the community helps make me a more effective advocate for Duluth. I value hearing from you, so please don’t hesitate to contact me anytime.

Sincerely,

Liz Olson
