SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Lawmakers returned to the State Capitol today for the start of the 2020 Minnesota legislative session. Rep. Jen Schultz (DFL – Duluth) and Rep. Liz Olson (DFL – Duluth) are both excited for the work ahead to deliver for Duluth and build a better future for all Minnesotans.
“In talking to Minnesotans, they are clear about the future they want for our state. They want and deserve great education opportunities for their kids, quality health care they can afford, and safe, inclusive communities,” Rep. Schultz said. “This session, I’m hopeful we can make progress on legislation to improve people’s lives and grow opportunity across the state.”
“I’m proud of our House DFL Minnesota Values Plan, an ambitious agenda which will help ensure an excellent education for all children, affordable, quality health care – including prescription drugs people can afford, economic security for all families, and stronger communities across the state,” Rep. Olson said. “I’m committed to enacting solutions to ensure everyone in our state can succeed and thrive.”
Last week, the House DFL Majority announced its 2020 Minnesota Values Plan, an agenda aimed at benefitting all Minnesotans through world-class education, access to affordable and accessible health care, safe and inclusive communities, and economic security. The agenda includes expanded early care and learning – including investments to make child care more affordable in Duluth, legislation to provide affordable insulin and reduce the price of prescription drugs, a public health insurance option, paid family & medical leave and earned safe & sick time for all Minnesotans, common-sense gun violence prevention including criminal background checks on all gun sales and extreme risk protection orders, and bold action such as a 100% clean energy standard to address climate change.
Additionally, Rep. Olson and Rep. Schultz will advocate for strong public infrastructure investments in Duluth and communities across the state through a robust capital investment bonding bill. Local priorities for this legislation include projects such as the renovation of A.B. Anderson Hall and other building upgrades at the University of Minnesota Duluth, new lab space at Lake Superior College, Lake Superior Zoo renovations, rehab of the Lakewalk and Seawall, the Clarity Project mental health initiative, and upkeep at the Duluth Depot.
This session, Rep. Olson will again serve as House Majority Whip, and in that role will continue advocating for policies on the House Floor, in the media, and across the state to improve the lives of Minnesotans. Rep. Schultz continues as Chair of the House Long Term Care Division and will work to advance solutions to strengthen the quality of life for people with disabilities, seniors, and vulnerable Minnesotans.
