Dear Neighbors,
While the 2023 Legislative Session was the most consequential in a generation, with numerous investments in the future of our state, we know there is more to do. As we approach the 2024 session, which begins February 12, I’d like to hear your input.
You’re invited to take the new Minnesota Values Project Survey. The survey features just six short questions about your outlook on the state, as well as your hopes, aspirations, challenges, and the priorities you’d like to see lawmakers focus on. The answers you and your neighbors provide will guide our work at the Capitol this spring and into the future. I deeply value engagement and input from our community and look forward to hearing what you have to say.
Tomorrow, Saturday, November 11 is Veterans Day. Thank you to everyone who has worn the uniform of our nation for your service, sacrifice, and dedication. This past session, I was honored to support a budget that fully supported the work of the operations of the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Military Affairs. We also invested in solutions to address veteran homelessness, expanded eligibility for Meals on Wheels for veterans, expanded bonuses for veterans who served following the 9/11 attacks, and more.
MDVA has a comprehensive summary available of all of this important work.
Next week’s forecast may give us a short respite from the cold, but winter is just around the corner, and many families struggle to pay the bills to keep their homes heated. The state’s Energy Assistance Program offers financial assistance with heating and electric bills, emergency fuel deliveries, and repair or replacement of broken heating systems. Grants are based on household size, income, and utility costs, averaging $500 and up to $1,400. Applications are available here.
Also, the state’s Cold Weather Rule took effect on October 1. The Cold Weather Rule can prevent utility customers behind on their bills from having their electric or natural gas service shut off if they develop a payment plan with their service provider. More information about utility shut-off protection is available here.
Please continue to be in touch with your feedback and input. It’s an honor to represent you.
Sincerely,
Liz Olson
State Representative
